My Thoughts on the Mobileye-Valens Webinar

Feb 2, 2021 4:18:47 PM

mobileye-social-2In close-door meetings, we at Valens constantly hear companies around the world discuss how excited they are about the new MIPI A-PHY standard. But because they don’t want to share their technological roadmaps with competitors, they’re often hesitant to state this excitement publicly.

Which is why I was so happy to share the stage with Mobileye’s VP SOC Architecture, Leonid Smolyansky. And I was even happier to hear him publicly endorse the A-PHY spec, as so many have done privately.

“Mobileye actively supports the standardization process,” he said during our joint webinar. “It’s important for Tier 1s, OEMs, it’s important for Tier-2s like Mobileye… No one should underestimate this.”

Mobileye (through Intel) is a contributing member of the MIPI Alliance, one of more than 330 members committed to this standardization process, including companies like Bosch, Sony, ON Semiconductor, Synopsys, STMicroelectronics, Qualcomm, and many more.

To my mind, the MIPI A-PHY standard has a lot of benefits, including:

1)    It is a real standard, and as such it will be implemented by multiple vendors.

2)    High performance – up to 16Gbps download speed in the current released spec, and up to 32 Gbps for the next-generation specification.

3)    End to end integration of native MIPI Alliance protocols over A-PHY.

4)    Best-in-industry noise immunity – The spec will have a packet error rate of 1E-19 – You’ll get an error once every 10,000 years or so… I don’t think even the world’s best automakers are planning on manufacturing cars that last that long.

5)    End-to-end functional safety - A-PHY is the cornerstone of the MIPI Automotive SerDes Solutions (MASS) framework, which will ensure full stack safety solutions for automotive applications.

6)    End-to-end security - MASS will also include authentication, integrity and confidentiality, for data protection of MASS camera, sensor and display components.

Mobileye, it seems, takes the same view of the benefits of A-PHY. And I can say that I personally have spoken to many companies around the world that share the sentiment – there is an incredible momentum in the market for this new automotive standard. And we’re just getting started.
